Our Story of Benjamin Links

Benjamin Links has been an ongoing process developed for and by all the families I have been fortunate enough to work with. Benjamin was the name of the first child I supervised. He is representative of the many children I have been touched by since. A smile from him was always deeply rewarding, because it meant I was that much closer to understanding his world. Every moment he didn't cry, I felt I was giving him another useful tool to adapt to the unpredictable and confusing world that we live in.

The dedication of the families of children with ASD was always inspiring in their endless devotion to their children. Helping parents discover the unique qualities and abilities of their child as well as seeing the quality of their interactions with their child increase is priceless. Especially when you consider after diagnosis, many families wonder if they will ever hear their child's voice speak or communicate as an individual.

So in light of all I have learned. How could I not give back by educating communities about ASD and making services available to all families through my teaching and my ability to link these families to important services. It is my belief that financial constraints and limited resources should not be a factor in providing services to any child. Unfortunately, it is a factor for many families. There are many links that tie me back to Benjamin. Each link deepening my understanding of Autism and my desire to continue an endeavor that has been most fullfilling. My hope is that Benjamin Links will continue to grow and touch many lives with a strong foundation in kindness, patience, and understanding for those that we serve.

I have an art project that Benjamin and I did a long time ago. I modelled a house for him which he imitated by drawing a square with windows and a door. He then cut out a triangle when modelled and pasted it onto the square to make a roof. I wrote Van for Van's house and he wrote Ben for Ben's house. We then took a polaroid pictures of each other and pasted our pictures holding the artwork up on our respective houses.
