Services

Benjamin Links provides three major services:

Behavioral Based Intervention Programs

The program begins by providing short-term intervention services to families who have a child recently diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. The period after diagnosis can be a critical time for both the child and for the parents. It is a crucial time for families to adjust and cope with a major unexpected change in their lives. It can also be a time of helplessness and blame. The program aims to provide much needed support and education for families at this critical time by providing initial 1:1 instruction, parent training, and collaborative transitions to important services that are relevant to the child's individual needs.

The behavioral based intervention is a 30-hour program using primarily Behavior Modification as a technique to teach children with ASD and their families. Behavior Modification is based on Operant Conditioning Theory that states a behavior will increase if it is rewarded and decrease or extinguish if it is not rewarded. Skills that are deficient are taught and behaviors that are excessive are reduced using behavioral methods.

Initially, each skill being taught is broken down into its most simple components in order for the child to learn, and the child is consistently rewarded for exhibiting the desired behavior. The process requires extensive repetition and the child may need to be prompted to exhibit the desired behavior. However, the prompt used to initially elicit the behavior are gradually removed so that the child's independent performance and initiation of the behavior are rewarded. This differential reinforcement increases the strength of the behavior until it is fully acquired and generalized. Once skills have been broken down and taught individually, the skills are chained together to produce behaviors that are more complex and functional.

Concurrent with the acquisition of new behaviors, the child's inappropriate behaviors do not receive rewards This eventually decreases the excessive behavior, replacing it with a more functional and desired behavior, enabling the child to better interact, communicate, and learn from his or her environment.

After the child's ability to respond to Behavior Modification is assessed, recommendations and assistance will be provided in order to help the families continue receiving this type of treatment. Linking them to the appropriate service will better meet their child's individual needs.

Ongoing Consultation

Once Benjamin Links completes the behavioral based intervention program, periodic consultation may continue to families who are having difficulty meeting the changing or growing needs of their child. Other behavioral based intervention services for children with autism are primarily focused on early intervention, but services disappear or slowly dwindle after the age of 5-years. Benjamin Links recognizes the needs of children of all ages, therefore providing continued observation of the child, continued parent training, and recommendations that will address parents' concerns as needed by the family. Benjamin Links may also provide continued educational goals for their child both at home and at school as needed. Benjamin Links would like families to be assured that when they're reaching the middle of the road, experiencing a crisis, or going through major life changes, and unsure what to do, that we will do our best to help.

Outreach Programs

Community outreach is another emphasis of Benjamin Links, because we believe the more educated individuals are about ASD, the more understanding communities will be in accepting differences in individuals. Outreach also helps reach those families most in need, the families that are unaware that their child has ASD. Workshops consist of training families and professionals in the techniques of behavior modification. Each participant learns through modeling or open discussion, how to apply appropriate behavioral techniques in response to the child's specific behavioral issue.
